Recently the worlwide release date was revealed to be 12th June 2008. Personally I can't wait for this game, I'm even saving up to buy a PS3 just in time for it's release.
Metal Gear Online looks pretty exciting as well and people who pre-order the MGS4 will get to take part in MGO Beta tests which begin in late April and will last for 2 weeks.

Might have to get a ps3 then! I loved the 1st and 2nd ones but never got to play the 3rd due to my ps2 deciding to pack up one day after the warranty expired so i got an xbox and experienced ninja gaiden and a few other gems.

The third game was pretty good, the only one I've not played is Portable Ops mainly because I don't want to waste my money on a PSP.
Supposedly the Wii may be seeing some kind of Metal Gear game as Kojima said it's a system he'd like to work with but only time will tell exactly what he's planning on.
Apparently four is going to tie up all the loose ends of the series and many requests on IGN's wishlist: http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/855/855420p1.html will be realised. Ironically enough after disliking Raiden I'm also pretty keen to play as him now.
I'm really looking forward to this game. But I'm not too sure if it's worth wasting $400 on a console that will spit out like a handful of good games. :/
PS: Mr.G&W you can play MGS3 on your Xbox. I suggest you do so. :)

I've always been planning on getting a PS3 eventually since I'm a big fan of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts which should both have games on the system in the near future. One thing I love in particular about MGS4 is the fact that Konami have made sure it had a worldwide release date. Shame Nintendo couldn't have done something similar with Brawl.
This one does look like all the other MGS games but times 100 in terms of quality. I'm especially intrigued to find out more about the online mode. It just seems like it could be immense.
Yeah it's a remake (a very impressive one at that) of the original Metal Gear Solid. If you had certain save data on your Gamecube memory card Psycho Mantis referenced to certain games as well which was a comedy bonus.

I wouldn't exactly call Snake "lesser known". Plus the NES Metal Gear games weren't the proper games anyway, Kojima had nothing to do with them.
